Breakout Session

Give Me a Break! Respite in Canada Today

November 4, 2025
11:10 am – 12:10 pm

Understanding the myriad ways that Canadian caregivers experience respite is key to knowing how to create and sustain a caregiver support system that is inclusive of all communities and offers guaranteed access to regular caregiver breaks.

This session will reflect on the role of accessible respite in caregiving and family resilience over the long term. Panelists will tap into their own professional and personal experience to reflect on the questions:

1) What barriers have you seen that prevent families from accessing in and out of home respite care?
2) What models of good practice in respite have you observed and what effect have they had on family wellbeing and resilience?
3) What roles can the CCCE, the government and the other entities such as the UN play to ensure greater and guaranteed access to regular respite for Canadian caregiving families?
